About a 200km drive from Condobolin, via Warren for groceries, brought us to the tiny settlement of Quambone.
The campground here is at the old local oval and has water and a couple of toilets. Lots of space inside a perimeter of rocks and also boasting an inner circle of rock “seats” and a central fire pit for those who like to sit around the campfire on the colder nights (or any night for some).
A “Primitive Campground” is defined in NSW legislation as providing toilet, water and rubbish bin facilities, and allows 2 campers per hectare of the total land area who must be at least 6 metres apart.
When we arrived we found one of our awning arms was jamming and wouldn’t telescope out so Keith had to remove the slider in order to free the locking bolt – just one of those “on the road” repairs!
There is a small flock of sheep roaming the town and today (Sunday) they meandered onto the oval around us before moving on down the main road; the evening also sees a few Kangaroos around. This area is well in the current drought “zone” and extremely dry all around, although there was some rain before our arrival and a shower on the way here. We have also had some showers since our arrival but it is now clearing.
As well as the town sheep various house yards revealed some geese, a Pony and a very woolly Alpaca:
There is not a lot left of the town here, a local store/PO, Hotel, two churches and a small primary school. A recent addition is a self serve fuel outlet with both diesel and unleaded; for a while the town had no fuel which meant a 40+km drive to Coonamble for fuel for everyone.
Elsewhere in town, next to the Memorial Hall, is NSW smallest library which was threatened with closure in 2010 but has been maintained for it’s unique place in the State.
The country around here is totally flat and the twin water tanks and Telstra tower both dominate the landscape. Friday after the rain storm we were treated to a colourful sunset over the swimming pool and surrounds.
