Waterwheel Cottage is a private campground close to Beauty Point on the way to the mouth of the Tamar River on the Western side. An open grass area with no facilities (but public toilets about 150m away if you really want them) the owner, Steve, charges $10/night. This is a great little place that he created from about five years ago after he sold the adjacent garden supplies business and a caravanner asked if they could camp in his paddock.
You can set up camp anywhere and we chose a spot close to the pond and waterwheel which turns on late afternoon and is actually floodlit across the water (sorry no night time picture!). Very popular with travellers as it is one of very few free or low cost camps at this end of the Tamar valley and you can stay as long as you like. The side where we were backs on to the York Town Rivulet.
The cottage on site which Steve lives in is over 100 years old and the whole area was the first settlement in Northern Tasmania; a small flock of turkeys wanders around together with Steve’s old dog who is deaf but very friendly (sorry no pic!).
