Macquarie harbour, about 6 times the size of Sydney Harbour, is Tasmania’s largest coastal estuary and the entrance is often referred to as “Hell’s Gates” reflecting the wild water that occurs at the entracne. This day of our visit was calm on the inside but the sea along the beach was in a pretty wild state, the incoming tide would no doubt bring a later change.
