Our stay in Renmark ended on a very wet and windy morning and we had decided to break the 400km journey to Port Augusta into two at the small historic town of Burra. The day did not improve and gale force North Westerleys were virtually a head-on together with driving rain for most of the journey; arriving at Burra at 1pm the temperature was still in single figures and the wind had not let up. The local Caravan Park was fully booked so we settled for the Showgrounds which, fortunately, had some dry areas on gravel for such weather events.
Burra the next morning was not an improvement, 6 degrees when we left at 10 am and still blowing gale!
Not far along you pass the old house in the top image for this post – recognised by many and now termed “The Midnight Oil House”, so popular the Council have created a carpark for tourists to stop and photograph it. This isn’t our picture as it would have been a bit grey. It isn’t long before you start to pass by the many Windfarms in this whole area from Burra and around Hallett and Jamestown.
We stopped for lunch at the town of Melrose, another historic location with a small RV Stop, IGA and not much else, the Hotel unfortunately is another country pub that has ceased to trade.
Following Lunch we continued through yet more Windfarms through the towns of Melrose and Wilmington then over Horrocks Pass to the coast of Spencer Gulf
