From Kalgoorlie we had decided to do the Golden Quest Discovery Trail, a loop of almost 1000km that takes in the historic gold joining areas to the North of Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The first step along the way is the historic town of Coolgardie, the first of the many towns that sprang up as gold was discovered in the region.

In Coolgardie we stayed at the free RV stop at the old Railway Station for 2 nights. The Station once was a museum but sadly no longer viable and locked up; a couple of community groups do make use of some of the rooms however.

On our first day walked to the Lions Lookout and back around the main street with its mixture of beautifully restored buildings and long-ago closed hotels and shops. With a population of around 1000 and about 600 miners in camps nearby it seems to have reached the survival point but being less than 40km from Kalgoorlie can’t support other than the basics of an IGA supermarket, a Caravan park (for sale at roesent), two roadhouses and two remaining hotels.
