Site Number 9 on the Golden Quest Discovery Trail is the ghost town of Kookynie; it hangs on with a population of just 13 but has a still operating hotel. The Grand Hotel was not the “grandest” in town when 2,500 people lived here but it was the closest to the railway when travellers arrived. It was not yet opening time when we passed by but the local resident horse was waiting patiently on the verandah.
The station platform remains and the station platform remains and this is still on the Kalgoorlie to Leonora operational line.
Few buildings remain with one block of shops restored by the same couple who took over the hotel some years ago:
