Adelaide River we had passed through already 3 times, heading to Darwin and out and back to Daly River. but had stopped only fro water on one occasion. There is a Caravan Park in the town centre but we chose to stay at the Showgrounds, just short distance over the bridge. Lots of space here although it was extremely busy earlier in the year in the mad rush to the top!
On arriving we were surprised to see that “The Traveling Jackaroo” was here; Sam is an 18-year-old driving this Chamberlain Tractor and rig around Australia raising money for the RFDS and Dolly’s Dream, and raising awareness about mental health
While this is still happening you can find his Facebook page and all the information here: https://www.facebook.com/thetravellingjackaroo

Adelaide River is known for its war cemetery where all those killed in the Darwin bombings are buried along with other casualties of the war in the top end, to quote from the official website:
There are 434 military burials in total and the adjoining Civil Cemetery honours 63 civilians including the nine post office workers who were killed in the 19 February 1942 bombing of Darwin. Also visit the Memorial to the Missing, where 292 service personnel are remembered, who lost their lives in Timor and other northern regions.
The final visiting point for us was next door to the Showground in the form of the Adelaide River Rail Museum; yet another of the significant points along the northern railway as it was developed and grew to the top end. The pictures take a walk through the complex.
