Black River Campground is adjacent to the estuary of Black River itself and only a few kms from Stanley (7km in a straight line and 19kms by road)
Being in a Conservation Reserve the camping is controlled by Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife and there is a self serve check in to deposit your payment of $13/night (for 2 people) and get the permit to put on the dashboard. This is the standard price throughout Tasmania for Parks camping and unlike most mainland states they have not yet embraced online payment.. This is mostly because bookings are not taken at most campgrounds so you have to pay more or less on arrival. In fact here you have to go and setup camp first and use the site number on your permit.
The campsites are all inland from the beach by varying amounts and the only access to the beach is via the estuary where there is a track for boat launching. This gives a reasonable windbreak against the Bass Strait “howlers” and good seclusion between campsites. At night the Pademelons come out and even in the day can be seen and heard among the shrubs.
