Charters Towers is one of those towns we had passed through maybe 4 times in our travels and not stopped so this time it was another to add to the list of visited places. We picked the Bivouac Junction Campground and Caravan Park about 20kms to the East of town. Set above the river we had a view across having chosen to stay in the unpowered camping area on the lower levels.
Following recent rains, the Burdekin has some flow and is more of a river than the last time we were in this area in 2014 (The Macrossan bridge free camp is downstream from here and across the highway) The camping area here covers several acres and the top section offers powered sites and a full amenities block, on the lower level a couple of demountable toilets and showers are in place. Adjacent to the camp the Fanning River runs into the Burdekin and has some rock pools and swimming spots.
The town of Charters Towers, like so many, grew around gold mining and the edge of the town still has many old mine shafts. These images take a stroll around one of the town parks and up the two lookouts.
