Moving on from Bingara we came to this Council Reserve, 9km from Warialda town centre. The Cranky Rock name is explained in the image below of the origins etc. of the name. Over recent years the public area here has been very well developed by Council to proved 9 Powered campsites and 2 areas for unpowered camping; 2 separate toilets and a disabled toilet with shower have been included and there are a couple of water tanks for general (non drinking water) use. There is a Dump Point and drinking water at a Rest Area on the edge of Warialda which is easy to access on the way here or to visit for further use.
One of the things you instantly notice here is the mixture of domestic and friendly animal life – there are two Peacocks, but we only saw one female; a collection of chooks with a very big Rooster overseeing them. and a 7 month old “rescued” kangaroo. There are other roos and Emu around as well as there was a wildlife reserve here for 20 years from 1989 to 2009 (see photos in next post).
There are reports of Echidnas here as well but we haven’t seen one yet. Today we came across a rather large specimen of Lace Monitor (Goanna), probably the “Bells Form” sub species according to our book? This one was almost 2 metres in length and scurried up the tree away from me as I walked to the Rock area.
Also, at the tree behind our van was what we believe is a Nobbi Dragon, gorgeous colouring and camouflage
