Leaving Broken Creek and the Benalla area we stopped first for the night at Greens Lake Campground, a free camp provided by Council and just a short drive off the Highway.  The weather was a little cool and windy but the outlook from our Lakeside camp spot was still good.

From here was just a short drive into Elmore and our old friends from Alice Springs, Mike and Ann Dunford.  They have sold their Melbourne house and settled here for a while at least and as their landlord owns the adjacent house and vacant block we had somewhere to park the van with access to water.

Mike is working as a volunteer in the local museum, the Hugh Mackay Discovery Centre; Mackay was the man who developed the first Combine Harvester which eventually became the “Sunshine” brand and after which the Melbourne suburb of Sunshine was renamed when the factory was established there. These images tell the story of this and the museum’s other exhibits:

As a town Elmore is around 1000 people and has all the basics including an IGA supermarket, good Medical Centre and is still serviced by twice daily passenger trains as well as Coach services to and from Melbourne.  It is located halfway between Bendigo and Echuca to give you a choice of extended shopping etc.
