March 10-13

Leaving Willow Tree we travelled via Scone and refuelled and then towards Merriwa where we stopped overnight at the Rest Area at Bunnan which we had to ourselves. Bunnan has very few buildings and no businesses to speak of but is the centre of the local farming community no doubt.

From Bunnan it was another 140km trip to the Showgrounds at Gulgong. There was a horse event taking place when we arrived (a Sunday) but lots of camping space and a cost of only $16/night with power and water, good clean toilet/shower facilities and a good (mostly) grass surface.

While here Frances put out some of her hand knitted cotton hats for sale for the first time.  We did have one “looker” but no sales unfortunately.

The town of Gulgong provides an interesting walk as there are around 130 Heritage Listed buildings. The old “General Merchants” is actually the modern day IGA in disguise!  Anyone just passing by is strongly recommended to use the “Heavy Vehicle Bypass” as the main streets are very narrow with parking both sides and are not one way!

The photos speak for themselves I think:

The lookout is interestingly called “Flirtation Hill” and gives great views of the town and surrounding areas.
