Anyone who has driven the Hobart to Queenstown route would remember going past Wayatinah and Tarraleah and descending the gorge to cross the river adjacent to the Tungatinah Power Station, where the huge pipes carry the water down the hill and under the road into the turbines.
Our first stop after Hamilton was at Tungatinah Lagoon where those pipes originate. A camping area provided by Hydro Tasmania, it has a new toilet added this year for the campers and fishermen.
Tungatinah is at the end of a daisy chain of lakes starting at Bronte Lagoon, which flows into Brady’s Lake, then into Lake Binney, and finally into Tungatinah Lagoon. These all offer camping areas somewhere around their perimeter, usually close to a boat ramp but also in other suitable locations.
A small camping area we mostly had it to ourselves for three days, a few views here from the banks and the dam embankment.
