April 22-24, 2024

Having transited from the Wheatbelt into the Great Southern, Katanning is the largest town in the district, having a Shire population a few hundred less than Narrogin and being large enough to have a Woolworths Supermarket (as opposed to Narrogin’s Coles). This was our opportunity to stock up after almost 2 weeks.

There is a 48 hour RV Stop in town where we stayed for two days and took a couple of walks around the general town central area using the Art Trail map as our guide but taking in some of the more than 100 Heritage listed buildings and sites in the Shire.

The Art trail started as part of the WA Silo Trail:
In November 2017 the PUBLIC Silo Trail stopped off in Katanning and as Katanning doesn’t have any silos they decided to light up a series of Western Power electrical transformer boxes and walls in the town centre with murals by prominent Western Australian artists. From the 2nd to the 7th of November street artists Brenton See, Chris Nixon, Darren Hutchens and Mel McVee created a series of murals throughout town.
Since that time other artists have added to the original 12 to create a current total of 21 sites.

Before leaving Katanning we spent a third day and night at the alternative free camp at the old trotting track, just 2km out of town, so that Frances could do a training run for which she managed 17km this morning.
