Heading out of Lowood we took the Gatton-Clifton Road over the Great Dividing Range; this is a fairly easy climb and has only a short section which is quite narrow but we didn’t encounter any trucks on that particular short stretch!
Emerging on to the New England Highway we continued through Warwick and pulled up for a late lunch and overnight at the Rest Area at Wallangara which sits astride the QLD/NSW border (The Rest Area is firmly on the Queensland side).
After a 240km journey the day before we travelled about 280km from Wallangara to the Council Campround at Bendemeer, on the bank of the McDonald River (top). Tis is an overnight stopoveronly but has lots of room and an old but clean toilet block; there is some town water here but most of the taps are out of action. and then continue a short distance South to the Freedom Camp at Willow Treet
From Bendemeer it was a short drive into Tamworth to top up on groceries and LPG and then contiue South to the freedom Camp at Willow Tree.
This is one of several campgrounds established by the Liverpool Plains Council and if you don’t need ower they ask for a donation in the honesty box or otherwise if needng power a fee of $15/night paid at the information Centre. We paid for this and decided to stay for 3 nights and catch up on washing etc. with the available power and water.
The small downside of staying here is the passage of coal trains along the adjacent railway line but we didn’t really notice them much during the night.
