Lynton, just 7km before you arrive at Port Gregory, was a Convict Depot and Hiring Station which operated only from 1853 to 1857 when it moved to Champion Bay (now Geraldton). Full information can be found in Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynton,_Western_Australia … who said Labour hire was a new concept ?

A surprise association here is the lady who became the inspiration for “The King and I”, Anna Leonowens who was the wife of the Commissariat Storekeeper here in 1856 and, after being widowed, went on to be the Governess for the King of Siam (Thailand)

The whole site here includes part of the adjacent Lynton Station, which also operates as “Linga Longa” Farmstay and camping; the main attraction there being Sanford’s House which is slowly being restored and only the upper floor currently accessible; this was the living area, with the lower floor being the servants quarters.
