April 24 to 26, 2023
Following our usual “policy” of trying to travel different routes and having crossed the QLD/NSW border at Mungindi we continued SSW from Walgett by going past the Macquarie Marshes (https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/macquarie-marshes-nature-reserve) The only camping area in the vicinity is the Willie Retreat at The Marra, a grazing property which has offered camping for some years and has suffered from the owner passing away (at 90 years of age) and being sold to a near neighbour. The property is unoccupied and another close neighbour (Nikki) is the camping caretaker who meets all booked in visitors at the gate or campground.

There are very few places to access any part of the marshes due to their protected status; there is a viewing platform on the Quambone Road (Gibson Way) which we did not visit but the others are the Monkeygarr Crossing where you get a view across the wetlands area as at the top of the post and here, and, the Burrima Boardwalk, constructed by Parks and Wildlife on private property with a$25 per vehicle entry fee, this is the 2.5km circuit walk.
