March 10-12, 2020
From Cann River we travelled another 50km to the Campground at Genoa which lies on the old Princes Highway adjacent to the Genoa River and the old bridge; this was once a paid campground with showers and laundry but is now a donation camp with just toilets and bins. A large area with varying numbers of vans during our stay of 2 nights, although 3 nights are allowed here.
The campground also has a monument to the Tetrapod (see plaque) and you can walk to the old bridge which has now totally collapsed into the river bed.
From Genoa Mallacoota is a 25km drive and we went over for Lunch and to get fuel and lpg and have a look at how the town is recovering after the recent bushfires. The area which was untouched appears to be thriving again with caravan parks well populated (and full for the recent long weekend). However, the area along the road to the boat ramp at Bastion Point reveals the destruction that occurred here with the fire having reached all the way to the beach and blocking off the boat ramp access.
