The Musselroe Wind Farm, seen from the Petal Point Campground above, has 56 V90 Wind Turbines of which 28 (half) appear in the above image. The farm produces 168MW which, over a year, is 5% of Tasmania’s energy needs. With an average wind speed here on Cape Portland of 33km/h the turbines are rarely still.
The towers here are 80m with turbine blades at 44m long. A blade sits on the ground at the visitor centre to give you a true perspective on how big these are.
The Visitor Centre has an interpretive display at the front about the history of the area and the indigenous people and the rear of the building has a circular skylight looking straight up a tower and panel displays of the development of the wind farm itself around the walls.
