Originally called Mount Newman until 1981, after the nearby hill and mining operation, Newman is now home to 8,000, with a capacity, including the transient workforce, of 15,000, making it the largest town in the East Pilbara (Which is also Australia’s largest Shire.
Built in the 1960s, and officially opened in 1966, the town sits at the junction of the Great Northern Highway and the Old Great Northern Highway, which we travelled down from Marble Bar and Nullagine.
