As the weather stayed fine and clear we took a short drive to the two major dams in this area. The Serpentine Dam (above) is the Northern barrier which forms Lake Pedder across the Serpentine River (see later post for the Southern dams) and along the way is this view from the “Lake Pedder Lookout”.
Serpentine Dam offers the ability to walk across the Dam Wall and look both back across the Lake and down the Serpentine Gorge. A set of steep stone steps at the end lead upwards to the start of the walk to Mount Sprent, around a 14km return walk.
Along the access road is the turn off to the Boat Ramp where you can also camp (with no facilities) but with no “residents” currently.
The Gordon Dam forms the second Lake in the area by bridging the Gordon River which subsequently flows into Macquarie Harbour and Strahan. Here you can climb down a very long set of stairs and cross the wall for further views. The steps are all see-through grating, not good for the vertigo, and Frances was not prepared to descend leaving Keith to take the descent alone. The next image shows Keith walking along the dam wall. Views from the bottom are well worth the climb back, which is the hard part!
The last of these images is the Gordon Power Station, a few kilometres back along the road from the dam wall.
