March 14-15
On the way from Jondarayan we stopped over in Dalby for a short while to stock up on water and groceries.
As we had been to the Warra Rest Area before we knew the layout and that it is 48 hours; this time we took a few more shots of the surrounds including the Hotel which no longer opens full time.
Also seen here is a railways memorial to the building of the line out here which was once the terminus for this part of the Darling Downs.
As Warra is a 48 hour rest area we decided to stay for the two days and have a look at the Condamine to the South of town and anywhere along it’s course that was accessible.
A few kilometres out of town we came across “Weir Access Road” not knowing that there is a Warra Weir. When we got down there we found a small area with a fifth wheeler caravan nicely set up on the bank overlooking the weir.
The weir itself was very low and no flowing water anywhere, obviously all the upstream irrigation is taking all available water.
Moving on from here the maps show a track following the course of the Rabbit Proof fence (which actually starts only a short distance to the North, near Jandowae. We found the track and as the gate was not locked decided to explore. Mostly the track is in good condition with only a short stony section. At the second gate Frances went to open it and it promptly fell over on it’s rotted out hinge post! (See video!).
Unfortunately after a total of about 7 or 8 kms the next gate was shut with “No Entry – Mining Operations”; we were hoping to get to the point where the fence crosses the river but had to turn back.
