Leaving Warwick behind we headed back Northwards but this time taking the highway junction towards Toowoomba (New England Highway) and turning off at Allora to head North Westerly in the direction of the Condamine.
Skirting past the edge of Leyburn you emerge into complete irrigation country surrounded by fields of cotton and sorghum with some Maize occasionally. The road to the weir is a straight line directly between crops and does in fact cross on a low level bridge below the weir when there is no excessive water flow.
At the time of our visit there was no flow over the weir at all, although it was just lapping the edge.
The cotton crop closest to the weir is just in full bud and starting to break out into the distinctive cotton balls of the final crop. Nearby some harvesting has already been done, as has some of the sorghum crop as well, although the section just over the weir is almost ready to be cut.
The camping area itself is quite a generous size and on arrival there were three others present; unknown to us the weekend was the annual fishing comp so a few others arrived later on Friday and everyone had gone again by mid afternoon Sunday. There were not many “bites” but a few dozen people had been spread out along the river having a good time and all gathered for the end of comp at lunchtime Sunday.
