Leaving Waterwhell Cottage we paused to look at Bradys Lookout (see previous post) and had already decided to come here to the highly recommended Old Macs Farm. What a great place just minutes from the centre of Launceston and for $10/night. There are no defined facilities but there is drinking water, with long hoses to refill the van, and rubbish bins throughout the site. At the onsite cafe there are toilets but it is a bit of a walk so using your own is the expected norm here.
We thought that the place might get full as there are four events in the area this Saturday – The Evandale Festival and Penny Farthing Championships, the Exeter Show, a Queen tribute concert at Mole Creek, and Symphony Under the Stars in Launceston ..and we were right! When we arrived i think there were less than ten sites empty out of 90 and by five o’clock it was more than full with Ian, the owner, allocating some “overspill” areas to those arriving late in the day.
There are walking tracks around the lakes area here and a climb to “Big Hill Lookout” which give some great views across the whole site.
Our rig in both these panoramas is close to the right hand side near the lakes edge
As you would expect there is lots of bird life here with several varietie of water birds and the inevitable Tasmanian Native Hens (who poop everywhere!)
Being Tasmanai there are Scottish Thistles growing everywhere. (But also yummy Blackberries which are ripening at the present time)
We stayed here for five days which took us to Evandale on the Saturday for the Penny Farthing National Championships – see next post…
