Finally we head off for the famous GRR, a 650km crossing of the Kimberley from Derby to Kununurra on what was originally known as The Beef Road, constructed and adapted for the movement of cattle from these remote Stations to the port at Derby or Wyndham. First we had to travel from Broome to Derby to refuel, here crossing the Fitzroy River.
After refuelling in Derby we visited the Prison Boab on the outskirts and Australia’s longest cattle trough. At 120 metres it could take up to 500 head of cattle on the way to the Port of Derby.

Our first stop for the night was at Birdwood Downs Station, only 20km from Derby, and a popular starting or finishing camp for travellers
