Leaving the dam we headed into Clermont to shop and do laundry while having lunch.

Between here and Charters Towers there is no really suitable Rest Area for an overnight stop so we stayed at the Belyando Crossing Roadhouse whihc has a small caravan park at the rear.  We stayed in the unpowered section and had access to good showers in the morning but there is no drinking water here.

Road Trains like the one above (parked out the front) remind you why these extra length rigs are not allowed on the Bruce Highway!  This one maximises the available length limit by using a slightly longer “A” trailer (3rd trailer) and the close coupling of B Double technology.

The next morning we headed trough Charters Towers and another 40km North to a large free campground at Fletcher Creek

FLETCHER CREEK

This is three separate areas, two on the Southern side of the creek and one on the Northern bank which has the small toilet block and a dump point.

Other than that there is nothing lse here except a few picnic tables and old concrete BBQs’

We stayed in the South-Western part which straddles the old road and the site of the original bridge:

After two nights here it was evident that the auxiliary battery in the ‘cruiser was failing and not maintaining enough power for the car fridge so we decided to backtrack the 40km vis Charters Towers and go via Townsville to pick up a new battery.  In between we stayed overnight at Reid River, a Rest Area only about 60km from Townsville.
