Leaving Gunnedah we headed up through Tamworth, pausing to empty the toilet and fill the water, and headed for the free camp at Cockburn River, about 30km to the East, close to the small town of Limbri. This is a very quiet little spot with a drop toilet, picnic shelter and lots of shade trees.
Obviously used a little by locals as a picnic spot and to walk the dog but we were the only campers for our two nights here and we could have stayed longer. Lots of bird life around but not much water in the river at present; not visible from the camp area but easily accessed a short stroll along the track.
