After 8 days around Lake Pedder we moved back down to Mt Field National Park and the NP Campground, at first for 3 or 4 days but then deciding to stay until after the Australia Day long weekend. The route back down Gordon River Road takes you back over the highest point on this road to the Wilderness; at this point you are at 620m elevation (compared with the 320m dam water level to the West, and 160m at Mt Field Campground to the East). Note the annual rainfall here of 190cm!

Mount Field Campground offers 15 powered sites with water connection as well (Top Image) and almost unlimited unpowered camping; there is a large amount of space in the main area (Next Image) and then a large paddock, partly used for car parking for day visitors, which is used as “overflow”. With camping from $10 in the overflow up to $20 for a powered site the value is great with a modern amenities block including laundry.

The Campground is on the bank of the Tyenna River and you can walk along the opposite bank through a Conservation Reserve and around to the Weir; then return via the old railway track where the weekends have pedal power Railriders in operation. Along the way, we encountered a little wildlife. Back along the access road returns you to the National Park Entrance.
