The old town of Silverton is mostly known as being the setting of the original Mad Max movie but in fact had already been used as a movie set before then.  There’s not much left of what was the first mining town in the Broken Hill area but they have managed to preserve a few of the main buildings of the town.

The Hotel of course is still here and being only 30km from Broken Hill is a popular spot for outings and lunches with it’s extended beer garden etc.

The Council offices, church and school are still intact and the Gaol is the local museum, and very well done.  As one of the art centres of Australia, Broken Hill’s art community extends to here as well with 2 galleries and a photographer’s gallery.  The Cemetery has some interesting old graves and as always in the outback is very sad to see how many children died very young, mostly from diseases such as Typhoid or Scurvy caused by poor food and water conditions.

FRIDGE UPDATE:

Yes we have a new (new) fridge and have updated our wiring to add a second Anderson Plug from the car, dedicated to the fridge.  As both previous failures occurred when we towed we will reserve our verdict until we leave Broken Hill!
