The Rock Free Camp

March 26 – April 2, 2018

The Rock is small community of just over 1000 30km South of Wagga Wagga. The local Recreation Ground serves as  Free Camp with lots of space, some shade trees for those who want, toilets, hot showers and water available, as well as a Dump Point.  A donation is requested for the showers and there are no restrictions on staying, pets are allowed and it is an official “off leash” dog area so Tess made some new doggie “friends”.

It is also an “active” oval as we discovered on our second night when there was a [practice AFL match between the locals and a visiting team from the neighbouring Albury district league.  We just happened to have parked right behind the goal posts!  As it turned out the goal umpire managed to catch most of the points (which was a lot with the locals winning 102 to 45) and we only scored one hit on the awning, one on the roof, and a final one on the side of the van next to the door which knocked our keys off the wall hooks inside!

Right on Sunset the huge local flock of Corellas returned home to roost and flew over the game in progress (which started in daylight and finished under lights).  To add to the location issues the ground sprinklers popped up in the early hours and thoroughly washed the side of the caravan and our awning.  Next day we moved a little further around the oval and only got minor overspray onto the awning for a couple of nights.  The sprinklers are obviously on some sort of 7 day cycle in sectors as every night was different.

Before leaving we needed to catch up on washing and as there was a tap in the old tennis courts we took our washing machine outside and hooked up to the water there and power from our inverter on the van –

We originally intended to move a little further South towards our starting goal of the upper Murray River but as it was very relaxing here and with some good company we decided to stay for Easter and avoid all the traffic and more crowded campgrounds.  The annual “Stone the Crows” festival was on in Wagga , starting when their campgrounds opened on Good Friday so the night before we had around 16 or 17 vans and motorhomes who were heading to the festival and left Friday at intervals.  That left five vans to stay for the whole period with an odd overnighter each day as well.

We finally left Easter Tuesday and headed via Albury to Lake Hume….
