“James Wilson became the Superintendent of Police for the region and moved into the new little cottage that was built as a police residence and station. From 1863 to 1975, there was always a Wilson living at The Steppes.”

This is the history of The Steppes Homestead now in the care of Parks and Wildlife and accessible for visitors to stroll around the grounds and read the history of this place.

The Steppes Sculptures in the Bush

A few hundred metres from the Homestead, and connected via the main road or a walking track, are these bronze sculptures. These were created by Tasmanian sculptor Stephen Walker,  “dedicated to those who share in the love and care of the Highlands of Tasmania, from the past to the future.” Walker was also responsible for the creation  of the bronze sculptures on the Hobart waterfront, and the whale at Cockle Creek.
