April 26-27
From Tilpa to Wilcannia was the best and recently graded for the first 60km or so and then worst surface we found so far in the last 30km of the 100 or so in this “section”.
Here the road surface was pretty old and was breaking up into potholes and rough sections so it had to be negotiated with a little careful weaving.
Wilcannia has an unfortunate reputation as “the most socially disadvantaged town in NSW” but we saw no evidence of that causing any problems.
The old caravan park has been taken over by the Council and the toilet block renovated and is really a very pleasant place to stay; at $20/night for a pwered site ($19 unpowered) it is also good value.
The town has some beautiful old buildings, many of which were restored with a grant a few years ago but now there is no funding available there is still work to be done. The Post Office needs finishing and the old Convent is falling down. We had a self induced camera problem here so will get some much better photos when we come back (see later post for why).
