Above: Kangaroos are plentiful around here – and tame!

Part 1 -January 30, 2019

From Bendemeer we travelled through Tamworth and Gunnedah before pausing to refuel at Coonabarabran before entering the Warrumbungles National Park. There is a main campground here with fees payable at the Visitor Centre as you drive in.  Camp Bkackman is divided into three sections for powered sites, a mixture, and (mostly) tents only; there is a nominal capacity of about 100 campers.  As we didn’t need power we opted for Blackman 2 and set up overlooking the surrounding open area with a view to the mountains.

There is an amenities block here at Blackman 1 with hot showers as well as toilets, and a small toilet near our camp

There are multiple walking trails throughout the park and as we are here for only two nights we decided to do the shortest after we arrived and had lunch which is the Wambelong Nature Trail joining the camp area to the main Picnic Area at The Gorge and looping back via the access road; this is about 4km.  Having seen a couple of Kangaroos on the way in we then encountered several on our way around and they are surprisingly unfussed by people nearby; a few bound away but mostly they are not bothered if you are a few metres away from them; the photos here re not taken with a telephoto lens but standard Nikon lens (18-55 for the camera buffs).

The images below take you through this walk from the camp area and return via the access road; along the way we see woodland and rocky creek crossings and finally the gorge.  There are (unfortunately) feral goats in the park as everywhere in the bush at present but far outnumbered by the ‘roos.
