Finally, 18 years after we left Tasmania, following 10 years of living in Huonville, we are heading back!  The drive from the Caravan Park took exactly the 1 hour and 2 minutes which the GPS predicted and we arrived at the wharf at 6.32am; there was some minor congestion which we had been warned of via SMS as the Carnival Legend cruise liner had docked early that morning.

Check in was smooth and we were in the first “batch” of vehicles to load which really paid off at the other end.  Loading started at 7am (instead of the predicted 7.30) and we found ourselves in the row which would be one of the first group of the caravans to drive off.

We left he wharf a little late at around 7.20 and by 7.30 were setting off Southward leaving the Carnival Legend and Melbourne in our wake.  By 10am we were in the middle of port Philip Bay with no land in sight for a while.

Around 10.15 to 10.30 we were passing Arthurs Seat and the Dromana/Rosebud Foreshore, an area we lived from 1986-1991

Shortly after we were joined by the Harbour Master Pilot boat which escorted us the rest of the way to the heads which we finally passed through at 11.30 into the open sea of Bass Strait.

The crossing, as predicted, had us arriving in Devonport a little before 7pm after a very smooth ride and we arrived under a very cloudy sky, but quite warm and not raining.

Being in the first row to disembark we were in the low cost camp at Girdlestone Park, less than 2km from the terminal, and set up by 7.30pm.
