Our second day at Penstock produced a weather change which turned to snow, followed by our diesel heater failing! This necessitated a move to a site wth power and so we moved across to the Great Lakes Hotel, only about 25km away. Heating is definitely needed up here at 1060m above sea level.

The hotel has a small number of powered caravan sites on a grassed area at the rear of the car park; a short walk back to the highway provides a view over the Lake.

From the Hotel we drove further North about 25km to get to the Lookout at the Northern end of the Lake; this road takes you to Deloraine in about another 30km but this time we needed to return to the East. Along the way there are several boat ramps which offer different views of the  114 square kilometres of Great Lake.

A little South from the Hotel and Miena is the Dam Wall and on an adjacent headland the grave of John Beamont.

The other major Lake in the Highlands is Arthurs Lake, about 10km to the South of Miena. There are no main vantage points here other than the Dam and boat Ramp but the area is well populated with fishing shacks and two campgrounds.
