Leaving the Kewa Valley we decided to make “Yacka” as th locals call it, our next stop.  The caravan park here is in a quiet hollow with a creek on both sides, plenty of space and good amenities.  Originally we thought we would stay for two days but lengthened it to four and have to be in Wodonga with the Landcruiser next Tuesday for it’s 1000km service after the new engine is run in.

This whole area is old Gold mining country and is also on the original route between Melbourne and Sydney in the late 1800s before the route of what became the Hume highway was finally decided further to the North.

The town here now has many Heritage listed buildings and has a thriving artistic community including music; the whole area is a thriving tourist area due to the heritage atmosphere, the Gold mining history and proximity to the high Country.  There is a small walking route in town which takes in “The Stone Bridge”, the old Courthouse and an old miner’s hut, as shown below.

The town still has three hotels, several antique, collectibles and op Shops as well as the local artisans of all types.

..next – a walk through Yackandandah Gorge..
