Driving the distance of only 7km took us to McDermid Rock, our next stop and walk/climb along the Golden West Discovery Trail. A small camping area, but not as small as some, has a toilet and tables and is right next to the rock, the walking trail starting about 50m from our van.
There is a plotted walking trail here that goes up and over the rock and around the main body, but the steepness of the climb to the first point was something we decided not to tackle, and it was far too steep to descend. So we settled for an out and back walk taking some of the locations in reverse order and including the summit from the other side and with our own variations including going around the base on the return to pass the wave-rock type cliffs just behind the campground.
